This is a beautifully prepared example of an unusual trilobite. It is a complete Lobopyge sp. from Morocco. This specimen was prepared under a microscope in the EXTINCTIONS Preparation Lab here in Walsenburg, Colorado. The bug was painstakingly exposed and sculpted with the head, genal spines, and the entire tail free-standing. Every tail spine, and even some pleural spines, are totally free of matrix and reach to the sky. The head is also prepared out, leaving the genal spines free-standing and the hypostoma (mouthplate) exposed. The stalked eyes of the trilobite are even preserved. And it goes with saying that the bug is very 3-dimensional and displays beautifully on the compact matrix block.
This is an amazingly prepared trilobite that just happens to be an uncommon type. It would be hard to find another Lobopyge with this much character.
