Here is a very large trilobite. This is a prone example of Illaenus schmidti from the Ordovician of Russia. This species of Illaenus has a huge, bulbous cephalon with sharply pointed free cheeks - which are quite evident on this specimen. This fine trilobite is extremely 3-dimensional and superbly articulated. Both free cheeks are present and tightly attached. The robust bug exhibits excellent detail. The wide-spaced eyes are easily seen and the individual thoracic segments are clearly defined. The gorgeous, butterscotch coloration of the fossil contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The trilobite is nicely centered on the large plate of limestone. This is a very displayable specimen of Illaenus schmidti from "Behind the Iron Curtain".
