This is simply a beautiful trilobite fossil. It is a large Illaenus tauricornis from Russia. This type of Illaenus differs from the more common types of Illaenus in that it has long, curved genal spines. This trilobite has these genal spines intact. In fact, both of the hook-shaped spines have been prepared free-standing! The trilobite is extremely inflated and exceptionally well-preserved. It has great natural caramel coloring and contrasts strikingly with the lighter, buff-colored matrix. This is one of those precious few examples of a rare trilobite that displays beautifully.
