Here is an excellent example of a highly collectible trilobite. This is a large Harpes (Aristoharpes) perradiatus from the Devonian of Morocco. This specimen was prepared under a microscope in the EXTINCTIONS Prep Lab. The fossil was then acquired by Richard Busch, longtime preparator/curator of the North Museum, and was in his collection for years.
Harpid trilobites are some of the most sought-after trilobites among collectors because of their rarity, bizarre design, and numerous segments. This type of trilobite has a huge cephalon with a wide brim that extends into broad, sweeping genal spines. The thorax is composed of many, many segments and the pygidium is almost miniscule in comparison. This distinct specimen is nicely outstretched, which is highly unusual. The ancient arthropod is preserved in a very 3-dimensional fashion and exhibits great detail. The small eyes are easily seen, and the granulose ornamentation of the cephalic brim is wonderfully defined. The natural orangish color of the trilobite contrasts beautifully with the lighter-colored matrix. The bug is well showcased on the large block of sculpted limestone. This is a very collectible and displayable specimen of Harpes perradiatus from the Busch Collection.
