Here is an excellent Middle Cambrian trilobite. This is a very scarce example of Oryctocephalus walcotti from the Spence Shale of Idaho. This formation contains a fauna that is very similar to the famous Burgess Shale deposits of Canada. In fact, Oryctocephalus is also found in the Burgess Shale. This type of trilobite has long genal spines and a pair of very long, needle-like pygidial spines. This trilobite is complete and beautifully articulated. Both free cheeks are present (one is still slightly covered by rock) and tightly attached - which is highly unusual . The spines of the bug are wonderfully displayed. The trilobite is well showcased on the squared plate of matrix that also contains sponge pieces and trilobite parts. This is an extremely collectible example of this rare trilobite from Idaho, USA.
