Here is a fabulous example of a very rare US trilobite. It is a beautiful Crassiproetus crassimarginatus from the Devonian of Iowa. This type of trilobite has a very distinct body style for the Middle Devonian, a precursor to trilobites like Griffithides from the Mississippian and Ameura from the Permian, although Crassiproetus lacks genal spines! This striking specimen is extremely inflated and wonderfully prone, which is extremely unusual. The amazingly articulated trilobite exhibits superb detail - the free cheeks are intact, the eyes are easily seen, and the individual thoracic segments are clearly defined. The dark brown, thick-shelled exoskeleton of the bug contrasts wonderfully with the light grey matrix. The large trilobite is beautifully displayed on its original block of limestone. This is a very collectible, top quality example of a highly uncommon trilobite from the Cedar Valley Formation of Iowa.
