Here is a very displayable trilobite. This is a large example of Illaenus schmidti from the Ordovician of Russia. This species of Illaenus has a huge, bulbous cephalon with sharply pointed free cheeks - which are quite evident on this specimen. This wonderful trilobite is extremely 3-dimensional and superbly articulated. Both free cheeks are present and tightly attached. The robust bug is near prone and exhibits excellent detail. The wide-spaced eyes are easily seen and the individual thoracic segments are clearly defined. The gorgeous, butterscotch coloration of the fossil contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The trilobite is almost perfectly centered on the large plate of limestone. This is a spectacular specimen of Illaenus schmidti from the Wolchow River.
