Here is an unusual ventral specimen of Asaphus (Neoasaphus) cornutus from the Ordovician of Russia. This large trilobite has been prepared ventrally so the bottom side of the exoskeleton is displayed. The forked hypostoma, or mouthplate, has been exposed and prepared in a free-standing manner. The ''hollowed out'' trilobite is well positioned on the natural block of matrix that also contains a large Asaphus (Neoasaphus) punctatus. This is a very distinctive trilobite plate with one trilobite having the mouthplate displayed.
