This is a very 3-D specimen of Illaenus schmidti from the Middle Ordovician of Russia. Most species of Illaenus have rounded genal areas - this species has pointed genal spines. This extremely inflated trilobite is wonderfully articulated and exhibits fine detail. The massive cephalon is well preserved and nicely displayed in the classic Illaenid position. The small, widely-spaced eyes are easily seen, and the pointed genal areas are quite evident. The rich, butterscotch coloration of the bug contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The fossil is aesthetically perched on the sculpted block of limestone. This is a striking example of Illaenus schmidti from the Wolchow River.
