Here is a very rare specimen of Kainops raymondi from the Lower Devonian of Oklahoma. This trilobite is differentiated from Paciphacops by the larger number of lenses in the eyes. This specimen is large and nicely preserved. The bug is very 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The granulose glabella is nicely displayed, and the compound eyes of the trilobite are well displayed. But the most amazing feature of this trilobite is the large bites taken out of the right side of the bug. It looks like some pleurons have been bitten off and the glabella and right side of the head is chomped - we prepared this fossil from a cross section - it was like this before it was collected or prepared. We found two of these bitten Kainops in one small area, and don't remember ever finding another! This is a very unusual example of this large-eyed Phacopid trilobite with textbook bite marks preserved.
