This is a beautifully-prepared trilobite. It is a specatular Coltraneia oufatenensis from the Devonian of Morocco. This fine specimen was meticulously prepared under a microscope in the EXTINCTIONS Prep Lab here in Colorado. This is a very difficult trilobite to obtain in good condition - and this one is excellent! The fossil is very 3-D and extremely inflated. The wonderfully articulated bug is superbly preserved and exhibits excellent detail. The huge, crescent-shaped compound eyes are beautifully displayed with facets intact. The black trilobite contrasts extremely well with the light-colored, sculpted limestone and red marble base.. But wait, there's more! Almost the entire trilobite has been prepared in a free-standing manner! Only a few craftsmen in the world could achieve this, and still retain the high quality of the detailed exoskeleton. This is easily one of the most amazing, one-of-a-kind examples of Coltraneia we have ever seen.
