This is a rare US trilobite from a classic site. It is a complete Achatella achates from the famous Walcott-Rust Quarry (WRQ) near Trenton Falls, New York. This type is one of the original trilobites that Charles Walcott and James Hall made famous over a century ago! The Harvard WRQ website describes the rarity of Achatella: "This trilobite is most often found as cephala...", showing that complete specimens are quite uncommon. This specimen is complete, with both free cheeks intact. The trilobite has good detail preserved and is very well articulated. The LONG genal spines are intact, and the pointed tip of the tail has been prepared free-standing, although the eye facets are not preserved. The trilobite is very well displayed on the squared limestone plate. Anyone who knows anything about the history of US trilobites knows how important an Achatella from this locality is - it is a rare piece of history. This is a very distinct example of the elusive Achatella achates trilobite from New York State.
