This is an extremely large example of Asaphiscus wheeleri from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. This specimen was found by Steve Hess in 1997 and just now prepared. The trilobite is complete and fully articulated - both free cheeks are present and tightly attached to the cephalon. The colorful bug is very inflated and has fine detail preserved. The fossil is well showcased on the somewhat rectangular plate of shale. But the amazing feature of this trilobite is the size - a two-inch Asaphiscus is very large, but a 2.6 inch one is, well, a freak of nature! This is an excellent specimen of Asaphiscus that just happens to be a monster.
