Here is a trilobite fossil with an interesting story to tell. This is Elrathia kingi from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. This specimen was found by Steve Hess in 2001. The trilobite exhibits excellent detail and is wonderfully articulated. Now comes the story - the right side of the trilobite exhibits a HUGE, clearly defined bite mark! The predator was probably an Anomalocaris, the T. rex of the Cambrian seas. Did this bite cause the trilobite to die, or did the wound heal? We will never know for sure. The trilobite has beautiful color and contrast and is nicely showcased on the large, natural plate of shale. This is a textbook (and highly collectible) example of predation amongst invertebrates in the Cambrian Sea.
