Here is an interesting presentation of a spiny trilobite. This is Kettneraspis williamsi from the Devonian of Oklahoma. This trilobite has been prepared so that the ventral side of the exoskeleton is exposed. The trilobite is complete and wonderfully articulated. Both free cheeks are present and tightly attached. It is extremely prone and exhibits great detail. The long, pleural spines are beautifully displayed and the smaller pygidial spines are intact. The tiny spines that border the free cheeks are clearly defined. The hypostoma (mouthplate) of the Kettneraspis is even preserved (highly unusual) and slightly shifted to the side. The caramel-brown trilobite contrasts well with the light-colored matrix. The fossil is almost perfectly centered on a large (approx. 3.5" X 4.5"), natural block of limestone that also has a brachiopod exposed on the reverse side. If you ever wondered what the ventral side of Kettneraspis looked like, then this is the specimen for you.
