As everyone knows, complete Mississippian trilobites are quite rare. This is a complete Comptonaspis swallowi from the Mississippian of Missouri. This genus of trilobite has a very smooth carapace - almost totally devoid of any ornamentation. This type of trilobite is found in the same formation as Ameropiltonia lauradanae, but Comptonaspis is about ten times more rare. This specimen is large for the type and well articulated. The bug is nicely inflated, and the eyes are easily seen. The dark brown color of the trilobite contrasts wonderfully with the light-colored matrix. The trilobite is well showcased on the large, squared limestone plate. This is a very fine example of this highly uncommon trilobite from the Mississippian.
