Here is a very rare US trilobite. It is a large Crassiproetus crassimarginatus from the Devonian of Iowa. This type of trilobite has a very distinct body style for the Middle Devonian, a precursor to trilobites like Griffithides from the Mississippian and Ameura from the Permian. This aesthetic specimen is very inflated and wonderfully prone, which is extremely unusual. The nicely articulated trilobite exhibits superb detail. The eyes are easily seen, and the individual thoracic segments are clearly defined. The dark brown, thick-shelled exoskeleton of the bug contrasts wonderfully with the light grey matrix. The ancient arthropod is beautifully displayed on the large block of limestone. This is a very striking specimen of a highly uncommon trilobite from the Devonian.
