Here is a very attractive specimen of an uncommon trilobite. This is a large Pterygometopus sp. from the Ordovician of Russia. This type of trilobite is known for having large, protruding compound eyes and no genal spines. This 3-dimensional trilobite is wonderfully articulated and beautifully displayed in the prone position. The fine detail of the trilobite is quite evident - the pustulose nature of the exoskeleton is easily seen, and the compound eye facets are almost fully preserved. The caramel-colored bug contrasts wonderfully with the light-colored matrix. The trilobite is well positioned on the natural plate of sculpted limestone. This is a great example of this rare trilobite from Russia.
