This is an extremely large example of Asaphiscus wheeleri from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. This specimen was found by Steve Hess in 1997 and just now prepared. The colorful bug is very inflated and has fine detail preserved. But this HUGE trilobite (almost three inches long!) has a story to tell. There is a large Asaphiscus tail fossilized where a free cheek should be! We do not know if the tail was embedded there when the bug was buried or if the tail grew there in place of the free cheek (theoretically possible!), but the tail fits so perfectly that there is no gap between the tail and the head. This is just a freak of nature! And the fact that this trilobite is almost three inches long, makes this a REAL one-of-a-kind piece. This is an extremely strange specimen of Asaphiscus no matter how you look at it.
