This is an excellent US trilobite. It is a large Phacops rana rana, found years ago in the Middle Devonian shales of Western New York. This trilobite is wonderfully prone and beautifully articulated. The bug is very 3-dimensional and exhibits great detail. The individual lenses of the compound eyes are easily seen, and the many pustules on the glabella are quite evident. The thick-shelled exoskeleton is unusually intact - each and every pleuron tip is present. The dark fossil contrasts well with the large, grey matrix plate of shale. This is a very fine, large example of this classic trilobite.
