Here is an unusual Russian trilobite. This is a Subasaphus platyurus from the Middle Ordovician layers near St. Petersburg. It is easy to see the differences between this type and the more common Russian Asaphids - this type has long genal spines, for example. This specimen is HUGE - over four and a half inches long! This 3-dimensional fossil is extremely inflated and exhibits great detail. The sweeping genal spines are clearly defined, and the large eyes are easily seen. The thick-shelled, caramel-colored bug contrasts superbly with the light-colored matrix. The trilobite is beautifully presented on the large slab of sculpted limestone that also contains a distinct cystoid. This is a very displayable example of an extremely large Subasaphus platyurus from Russia.
