This is a very rare Lower Cambrian trilobite. It is an Olenellus getzi from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. This specimen was found YEARS ago, and was recently acquired from a major fossil collection. MANY decades ago, the Getz Quarry was famous for quarrying rock for farmhouses in the area (we have even seen trilobite parts preserved in the blocks of the foundations of some of these old buildings!) With modern materials now available, the Getz Quarry became obsolete, and then closed, before real scientific work was done. Occasionally, over the years, a few specimens were recovered from the abandoned quarry. This is one of those specimens. This trilobite is over four inches long, and if it were totally complete, would have been a monster! The trilobite has the cephalon and eight segments intact - not quite complete. The detail is exceptional and the features of the bug are very distinct. The large size and amazing detail is what made these trilobites so sought-after for all these years. This is a very definitive example of one of the most elusive species of trilobites from Pennsylvania.
