Here is a trilobite fossil with an interesting story to tell. These are Elrathia kingi from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. This specimen was found by Steve Hess in 2001. The trilobites on this plate exhibit excellent detail and are wonderfully articulated. Now comes the story - the left side of the largest trilobite exhibits a HUGE, clearly defined bite mark! The predator was probably an Anomalocaris, the T. rex of the Cambrian seas. Did this bite cause the trilobite to die, or did the wound heal? We will never know for sure. All three trilobites have beautiful color and contrast and are nicely showcased on the natural plate of shale. This is a very fine (and highly collectible) example of predation amongst invertebrates in the Cambrian Sea.
