Here is an unusual specimen of Asaphus (Neoasaphus) cornutus from the Ordovician of Russia. This large trilobite has been prepared ventrally so the bottom side of the exoskeleton is displayed. The forked hypostoma, or mouthplate, has been exposed and prepared in a free-standing manner. The ''hollowed out'' trilobite is well positioned on the natural block of matrix (the different colors of the skin of the trilobite is due to the different thicknesses of the shell). This is a very distinctive specimen of a trilobite with the mouthplate preserved.
This fossil was collected and obtained legally, and is also being sold legally.
