This is a very pretty specimen of Illaenus schmidti from the Ordovician of Russia. This type of Illaenid trilobite has very sharply-pointed genal areas. Usually Illaenus have the head tucked downward - not this specimen. This extremely inflated trilobite is well preserved in an outstretched position. The bug is wonderfully articulated and exhibits fine detail. The huge, bulbous glabella is beautifully displayed. The small, widely-spaced eyes are easily seen, and the pointed genal areas are quite evident. The caramel-colored bug contrasts nicely with the light-colored matrix. It is beautifully displayed on the sculpted plate of limestone. This is a very attractive specimen of Illaenus schmidti from the Wolchow River in Russia.
