This is a gorgeous example of a rare trilobite. It is a very unusual Megistaspis accuticauda from the Lower Ordovician of Russia. This type of trilobite has a very triangular cephalon with thin genal spines. The pygidium is also quite triangular and has a short caudal spine. This trilobite is 3-dimensionally preserved and almost perfectly prone. It is wonderfully articulated and exhibits great detail. The protruding eyes are easily seen, and the sweeping genal spines are quite evident. The butterscotch-colored trilobite contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The bug is well positioned on the sculpted plate of limestone.
This trilobite also comes with a bonus. A large, extremely rare hypostoma from Megistaspis is also included with this specimen. This hypostoma is very inflated and nicely centered on the block of matrix. How many trilobite collections have one of these babies? This is a highly collectible example of this unusual trilobite with a very rare and unique mouthplate.
