As everyone knows, complete Mississippian trilobites are quite rare. This is a Comptonaspis swallowi from the Mississippian of Missouri. This genus of trilobite has a very smooth carapace - almost totally devoid of any ornamentation. This type of trilobite is found in the same formation as Breviphillipsia sampsoni, but about ten times more scarce. This specimen is quite large for the type and well articulated. The bug is nicely inflated, and the eyes are easily seen. The dark brown color of the trilobite contrasts wonderfully with the light-colored matrix. The trilobite is beautifully positioned on the natural plate of limestone that also contains a few bryozoans. This is a fine example of this highly uncommon trilobite from the Mississippian.
