This is a stunning trilobite. It is a Thaleops ovata from the Ordovician of Wisconsin. This specimen is extremely inflated and wonderfully enrolled. There is no crushing or compression whatsoever. The rear of the pygidium meets the front of the cephalon in almost perfect fashion. The wide, flaring genal spines are meticulously prepared in a free-standing manner and are totally natural with NO RECONSTRUCTION at all. It is VERY RARE to find a complete Thaleops with both genal spines fully intact - they are so long and pointed that usually they break off easily or were poorly preserved. The protruding eyes on this specimen are present and easily seen. The golden calcitic preservation is quite beautiful. The specimen is free of matrix (loose) and has been temporarily attached with mineral tack to the rock from which it was extracted (it is easily removed!) This is a near-pristine example of this highly collectible US trilobite.
