Here is an interesting trilobite. This is a large (almost 3 inches long) Chotecops sp. from the famous Devonian slate of Bundenbach, Germany. These slate quarries are now closed and the only way to obtain these "classic" specimens is through the dispersal of old collections. This site is one of the few places in the world where the fossilized appendages of trilobites have been found. This outstretched specimen has been ventrally prepared and is wonderfully articulated. Although the appendages are not preserved on this particular specimen, the detail of the carapace is very nice. The fossil is replaced by iron pyrite or "fool's gold" and is well positioned on the large (5.8" X 5.9"), plate of roofing slate. This is a fine example of a trilobite from a renowned site that is no longer producing specimens.
