Here is a very attractive specimen of an unusual trilobite. This is Metopilekia sp. from the Ordovician of Morocco. This type of trilobite looks somewhat like a Ceraurus with an extremely bulbous glabella and fairly long genal spines that extend from the cephalon at a jaunty angle. The pleurons are extended into thin, pointed spines, and the pygidium exhibits three pairs of protruding spines. This outstretched specimen displays these features in beautiful fashion. This trilobite is wonderfully articulated - usually this type is found in a somewhat disarticulated state of preservation. The 3-dimensional, dark brown bug contrasts nicely with the lighter-colored matrix. It is extremely well centered on the large block. This is a striking specimen of this highly uncommon Ordovician trilobite from Morocco.
