Here is an unusual US trilobite. This is an extremely robust specimen of Anataphrus vigilans from the Ordovician of Iowa. The trilobite is nicely outstretched, which is extremely unusual - almost all specimens of this type are found enrolled. The bug is wonderfully articulated and exhibits fine detail. The eyes are easily seen protruding above the smooth carapace, and the individual thoracic segments are clearly defined. The thick-shelled, caramel-colored trilobite contrasts wonderfully with the buff-colored matrix. It is beautifully perched atop the sculpted block of limestone. This is a very displayable example of this uncommon trilobite from Iowa.
