This is a very striking plate of trilobites from the Ordovician of Russia. There are two different trilobites on the slab. At the top of the plate is a wonderful example of Illaenus sp. This trilobite is quite large for the type and is wonderfully articulated. This Illaenus is complete and almost perfectly prone - which is very unusual. Most Illaenid trilobites have the cephalon preserved in a "tucked" position. A nice specimen of Asaphus (Neoasaphus) punctatus is positioned below the Illaenus. This trilobite has the eyes borne on thick stalks. Both trilobites are very inflated and exhibit fine detail. The caramel-colored trilobites contrast beautifully with the light-colored matrix. The bugs are well positioned on the large plate of limestone. This is a great specimen of two different Russian trilobites.
