Here is an extremely rare Phacopid trilobite. This is a complete specimen of Trimerocephalus mastophthalmus from the Devonian of Germany. Phacopid trilobites are usually known for having large compound eyes - but this Phacopid has no eyes at all! This outstretched trilobite is preserved in a very 3-dimensional manner and exhibits fine detail. The individual thoracic segments are easily seen and the wide, pygidial ribs are clearly defined. The orangish-brown fossil contrasts nicely with the grayish matrix. The fossil is well presented on a somewhat trapezoidal piece of shale. This is a very good example of this unusual trilobite from Germany.
