Here is a very attractive trilobite. This is Asaphus (Neoasaphus) punctatus from the Ordovician of Russia. This 3-dimensional trilobite is wonderfully articulated and exhibits great detail. Note the large, stalked eyes - a defining feature of this species. It has been theorized that this trilobite buried itself in the mud of the sea floor with just the eyes protruding above the muck. In this position, it would be well hidden from any predators. The rich, caramel brown color of the trilobite contrasts well with the cream-colored matrix. It is nicely presented on the natural piece of limestone that also contains a specimen of Echinosphaerites, a spherical cystoid. This is a very aesthetic specimen of this trilobite with the thick-stalked eyes.
