This is a special trilobite fossil. It is a complete Acanthopyge from Morocco. This type was composited from parts for years, because there had never been a complete specimen found. Recently, a few complete ones have been found, and this is one of them This specimen is essentually complete - the head, body, and tail are all intact and articulated. But the very unusual feature of this trilobite is that there has been a major bite taken out of the tail! This bite was probably not enough to kill it, just scar it for life. Some of the pleurons are also nipped, and have grown back into a point, showing that it lived and molted after the attack! The tail also shows signs that it healed along the bitten edge. Even with these predatory features, the quality of this bug is exceptional. The thick shell exoskeleton is beuatifully preserved and exhibits amazing detail - the fine pustulation is even seen with the naked eye. This is not only an excellent example of this rare trilobite, it is one of the few instances in the fossil record of predation on a Lichid trilobite.
