Here is a very appealing plate of fossils from the Ordovician of Russia. There are two different trilobites, a cystoid, and a brachiopod on this slab. On the left side of the slab is a wonderfully articulated example of Asaphus (Neoasaphus) punctatus. This trilobite has eyes borne at the ends of long, thick stalks. A nice specimen of Asaphus (Neoasaphus) cornutus is on the right side of the plate. This trilobite has shorter eye stalks and a much wider body plan. At the top of the plate is a primitive echinoderm. This cystoid, Echinosphaerites sp., is preserved in a very 3-dimensional fashion. A coarsely-ribbed brachiopod is positioned near the bottom of the slab. The fossils are all quite inflated and exhibit fine detail. The natural coloration of the fossils contrasts beautifully with the light-colored matrix. This is a striking plate of fossils from the Ordovician sea.
