Here is an interesting plate of Mississippian trilobites from Missouri. As everybody knows, Mississippian trilobites are quite rare. There are two different types represented on this slab. On the right side of the plate is a complete example of the pustulose Breviphillipsia sampsoni. This trilobite is almost perfectly prone. Both free cheeks are present, however, the right cheek has been somewhat pushed inward. A partial Comptonaspis swallowi is positioned above and to the left of the Breviphillipsia. This type of trilobite has a very smooth carapace. Both trilbites are nicely inflated. The dark brown color of the trilobites contrasts nicely with the gray matrix. They are well centered on the rectangular plate that also contains several Breviphillipsia pygidia and a solitary coral. This is a very good example of elusive Mississippian trilobites.
